The Agency is committed to building a vibrant and inclusive tourism sector that benefits both visitors and local communities. Through a range of innovative programmes and projects, the Agency supports community tourism, empowers young professionals, nurtures small businesses, and promotes the region as a leading destination.

From strengthening grassroots Community Tourism Organisations to showcasing “Drakensberg & Beyond” on national and global platforms, these initiatives are designed to grow tourism, stimulate economic opportunities, and ensure lasting benefits for the people of Harry Gwala.

Key Programmes & Projects

Tourism Marketing & Promotion
“Drakensberg & Beyond” brand is showcased through trade and exhibition shows such as Africa Travel Indaba, World Travel Market Africa etc., digital campaigns, expos, and collaborations that bring the district to both local and international audiences.
Development of the Tourism Signage and Destination Frames
These are essential for providing visibility to the tourist resources of a territory and destination frames as a strategic approach to managing how the destination is perceived and experienced, ultimately influencing tourism outcome. The Agency prioritised the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality for the establishment of four (4) tourism directional signage and one (1) destination frame installed in strategic entry areas.
Event & Festival Promotion

The Agency partners with organizers to boost local events that attract visitors and create business opportunities, contributing to a stronger tourism calendar.

Flagship Partnership: Splashy Fen Music Festival (Impi Concept Events) In 2025, HGDA formalized a partnership with Impi Concept Events to strengthen the impact of South Africa’s longest-running music festival, Splashy Fen, held annually in the Southern Drakensberg. More than just a festival, Splashy Fen blends live performances, camping, adventure activities, food and craft markets, and community upliftment. It attracts thousands of national and international visitors, extends stays in the district, and contributes significantly to the local economy with an impact valued at over R89 million. The collaboration ensures that local SMMEs, artists, and communities benefit directly through employment, business opportunities, and cultural exchange, while positioning the Drakensberg & Beyond as a premier cultural tourism destination.

The Agency also supported Zotshoza Holdings, an events planning and management organisation for hosting the Lakin’ Dam Good Festival. The outdoor event offers various adventure, lifestyle, activities that cater for different people. The Agency identified more events which are a major draw card for visitors into the region. Amongst others is the South African Television and Music Awards (SATMAS) and Harry Gwala Film Festival.

Community Tourism Organisation Support

The Agency provides training, coordination, and funding to Community Tourism Organisations (CTOs), ensuring that local communities actively participate in and benefit from tourism.

Tourism Enterprise Development
Supporting small tourism businesses in accommodation, guiding, crafts, and hospitality etc., to grow and compete, helping local entrepreneurs thrive in the tourism economy.
Film Tourism Development
The Agency promotes Harry Gwala as an emerging film destination, supporting film makers with logistics, scouting, and connections to local support services.
Tourism Graduate Development Programme (TGDP)
The Agency partnership with the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs are committed at nurturing the next generation of tourism leaders, TGDP offers graduates workplace experience within CTOs and tourism offices, strengthening skills and professional growth.
School Tourism Awareness (iNgakithi Tourism Schools Competition)
The Agency’s partnership with the KZN Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs inspires the next generation through school-based programmes that raise awareness, encourage youth participation, and build pride in local tourism assets.
